Director Siva like his mentor K Balachander has made a bold attempt in making a movie like Dhanam. Dhanam talks about two raging issues in the society including prostitution and superstition.
Dhanam played by Sangeetha is forced into prostitution. In spite of leading a life which is very difficult, Dhanam helps the poor and indigent with the money earned by her. At this stage one Anantharaman (Prem) from an orthodox Brahmin family decides to marry her. Dhanam reciprocates but on the condition that the family should accept the wedding. As expected, the Brahmin family opposes the marriage but when an astrologer Vedagiri (Kotta Sreenivasa Rao) predicts that the family would become rich if they accept Dhanam. But the astrologer had said this with an evil motive to woo Dhanam.
Dhanam gives birth to a child and she problem crops up. She is again compelled to get into her old profession. What happens to Dhanam, her husband and her child? is told in the climax.
Though director Siva has made a bold attempt to make a film like this, he fails at many places. Most of the instances seem unnatural.
The film has huge star casts including Girish Karnad, Ashish Vidayarthi, Manobala, Illavarasu, Rajalakshmi, M S Bhaskar, Mayilsamy, Karunas and many others.
There is a separate track for comedy but it does seem to blend with the film.
Music is by Ilayaraja. Late cinematographer Jeeva has done camera work for half of the film and it could be very well differentiated from that of the work by Srinivas Devasam who followed Jeeva.
The director could have concentrated more on the screenplay.
